food sourcinG

Finding the freshest, high quality foods can be tricky, depending on where you live. A great place to start would be finding out where the nearest farmer’s market is in your area. Cutting out the middle man and sourcing your food directly can save some money, and it helps ensure you are getting fresh, unsprayed or organic, unadulterated foods. It’s also taking money out of Monsanto and Bill Gates’ pockets and instead supporting small local farmers. Often commercial produce is rinsed in bleach or irradiated to prolong “freshness”. This is not good. At the farmer’s market, you are able to ask the farmers questions like how they mineralize their soil and how they control pests. Often times you can source local grass-fed meats, grains and dairy at the market as well! A fabulous resource for checking on your area’s local in-season produce is Seasonal Food Guide.

If you do not have a farmers market nearby, consider an online option like Eat Wild, FarmMatch.com, and RealMilk.com to find farms in your area. Online produce box delivery companies can be a great option for convenient lower-cost organic produce. Imperfect Foods, Farm Fresh To You, and Hungry Root are great companies. Two of my favorite online sources for grass-fed meats are Buy Ranch Direct and Piedmontese.

COOK AT HOME.

I know, some of you don’t cook, or don’t want to cook. If you won’t learn—I get it. Your best option would be to source your meals from restaurants that you know cook with olive oil, butter, and lard — NOT industrial seed oils like canola, grapeseed, soybean, etc. These are highly inflammatory and increase oxidative stress in the body. Just ask your chef!

If you are not a cook but willing to learn, one of my favorite websites where I learned a ton is called FOODGAWKER. You can search for recipes that feature an ingredient you would like to use or a dish you would like to make. It populates your search results with hundreds of food blogs and recipes. Way better than a google search!
