adrenal health.

Small but mighty, our Adrenal Glands sit on top of our kidneys, and work hard to help us respond to stress and the demands of life by secreting over 50 different chemicals, including cortisol, adrenaline, and androgens. Adrenal “burnout” is a popular term to describe overworked, undernourished adrenals.

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue

  • Fatigue in the morning, having a hard time getting out of bed

  • Light sensitivity

  • Brain fog

  • Muscle weakness

  • Deep fatigue after a stressful moment

Review lifestyle factors

It’s important to address the lifestyle facets that contribute to adrenal burnout. Examining your approach to work is helpful in identifying adrenal-taxing behaviors like constant rushing, hustle mentality, skipping meals, living in fear, living in disorganization, and not getting enough sleep can be helpful in reframing a more sustainable approach to living.

Reviewing your relationship with caffeine is another important step in rehabilitating the adrenal glands. I’m not saying caffeine or coffee is bad for you. But if drinking it throughout the day is how you’ve been getting by, you have been “over-drafting your account” by manufacturing a stress response in order to feel energy. This vicious adrenaline-fueled cycle has to stop. Try tapering off a little each day so that you are consuming no more than 200mg of caffeine per day, preferably getting down to one cup or ~90mg. Eat a balanced meal in the morning before having your coffee. This will help give your adrenals a break.

Addressing trauma, stress patterns, PTSD, and emotional stress are all important to help rebalance the adrenal glands. These glands are the first responders to stress. The way we respond to stressful events, carry stress, and process intense emotions all play a role in burned out adrenal glands and our overall health. There are many resources to help heal trauma and an over-reactive stress response including but not limited to EMDR, DNRS, EFT, hypnotherapy, somatic therapy, connecting to Nature, and sound healing.

Nourishing with Adrenal cocktails

The adrenal cocktails are the first START in the protocol, providing electrolyte support which helps to nourish the adrenal glands. The nourished adrenals can then support the liver in making more ceruloplasmin (bioavailable copper). More functional ceruloplasmin creates a cascade of beneficial, self-healing effects all over the body. Since much of the body’s vitamin C is stored in and used by the adrenal glands, wholefood C also plays an important role in the adrenal cocktails.

If you are just starting out, try a 1/4 or a 1/2 of a recipe first, and build up to a whole one, then to two per day. We are building a true foundation of wellness here, and it cannot be rushed or strong-armed. The other important bit is that it is taken on an empty stomach— this way these simple nutrients go straight to the adrenals instead of getting processed and parceled out with more complex solid foods.
